# Working with Chats

> Switch AI Assistant chats, attach files, use voice input, and edit or copy messages

## How to Use

1. Click the "Chat" button
2. Enter what you need
3. Review the response and any changes to your note
4. Add another instruction if needed. To return to earlier content, restore a version from the note's version history

## Earlier Chats and New Chats

Each chat belongs to the note where you started it. Chat history shows the chats from the note you have open. To open a chat from another note, open that note first, then choose the chat from its history.

* **Desktop browser and Mac app**: Click the chat title at the top of the chat panel to open "Chat history". If there are no earlier chats, only the title appears. To start a new chat, click `+` at the top of the panel
* **iOS app and mobile browser**: Tap the clock button at the top of the chat screen to open chat history. Tap `+` next to it to start a new chat. `+` appears once the current chat has messages

In a desktop browser or the Mac app, "Long chats lower answer accuracy" appears above the chat box when a chat gets long. Click "New chat" in that notice to start a new chat.

## Attach Files

In a desktop browser or the Mac app, click `+` in the chat box and choose "Add photos or files". In the iOS app, tap `+` and choose "Choose file", "Choose photo", or "Take photo". In a mobile browser, tap `+` to choose a file.

You can attach up to 50 files per message, with a combined limit of 512MB.

* Images, video, and audio
* PDFs, up to 1,000 pages per file
* Office files (`.docx`, `.xlsx`, and `.pptx`)
* Text files (`.md`, `.markdown`, `.txt`, `.csv`, `.html`, and `.htm`), up to 100,000 characters per file

Each video can be up to 10 minutes, and each audio file can be up to 2 hours. You can preview text, images, PDFs, audio, and video before sending. You can attach Office files, but they don't have previews.

When you paste 1,000 or more characters into chat, Inki attaches the text as a file. You can send the attachment without adding a separate message. The attachment chip shows the beginning of the pasted text.

AI Assistant edits the body of the note you have open. If you want a long draft revised as note text, paste it into the note instead of the chat, then ask.

You can also refer to files you attached in an earlier conversation. Describe the conversation and the file you want to use, for example, "Summarize the proposal I shared in our previous chat." This applies only to files you attached yourself.

## Use Voice Input

Voice input is available in desktop browsers, the Mac app, and the iOS app (version 1.0.9 or later). Press the microphone button in the chat box, allow microphone access, and speak. Press the stop button to put the transcript in the chat box, where you can review and edit it before sending. Press the send button while recording to stop, transcribe, and send your message.

Each recording can be up to 5 minutes. The daily processing limit is 30 minutes, with at least 1 minute counted per request, including failed attempts and retries. Use text input if your device or browser can't use the microphone.

## Edit a Sent Message

You can fix a message you've sent and send it again. Everything after that message is removed from the chat, and AI Assistant writes a new response to the edited message.

* **Desktop browser and Mac app**: Click "Edit" below the message, or double-click the message. Then fix it and send
* **iOS app**: Long-press the message and choose "Edit and resend message"
* **Mobile browser**: Tap the edit button below the message

## Copy a Response

* **Desktop browser and Mac app**: Hover over a code block in a response to show "Copy" at its bottom right. There's no button to copy a whole response, so select the part you need and copy it. To copy a message you sent, use "Copy" below the message
* **iOS app**: Long-press a response and choose "Copy response". To copy a message you sent, long-press it and choose "Copy input"
* **Mobile browser**: There's no button to copy a response. To copy a message you sent, tap the copy button below it

## When a Response Stops Early

In the iOS app (version 1.0.9 or later) and mobile browsers, use the Continue button when it appears on the latest response, such as after reaching an output limit. If a response stopped because you ran out of credits, restore your balance before pressing Resume. Continuing or resuming uses the original model and consumes credits for the work actually processed.

## Queued Messages after an Error

In a desktop browser or the Mac app, if generation fails, any message you queued stays on hold instead of being sent automatically. Once sending is available again, check its content and choose "Send now" to send it. Sending a separate message from the chat box does not automatically send the held message.
