# Use Inki in Cursor

> Connect Inki to Cursor to find, read, save, and edit your notes

## How Inki Works in Cursor

From Cursor's agent, you can find your Inki notes, or save a draft you wrote in your editor as an Inki note. Notes you save open in Inki, so you can keep writing there.

## Connect Inki

You need an Inki account.

1. Open Cursor's settings file `~/.cursor/mcp.json` and add this entry inside `mcpServers`, then save. Don't replace the whole file, or you'll lose the servers you already have

   ```json theme={null}
   "inki": { "url": "https://inki.so/api/mcp" }
   ```

   If the file doesn't exist yet, you can create it from "Customize" > "MCPs" in Cursor's left sidebar. In that case, make it look like this

   ```json theme={null}
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "inki": { "url": "https://inki.so/api/mcp" }
     }
   }
   ```

2. In Cursor's left sidebar, open "Customize" > "MCPs", choose "inki", and click "Authenticate"

3. Inki opens in your browser. Log in to Inki and click "Allow connection"

4. Go back to Cursor and check that "inki" shows a green dot and "Connected"

Instead of editing the file, you can ask Cursor's agent to add Inki for you. In Inki in a desktop browser or the Mac app, open Settings > Account, go to "Connect your agent", click "Copy" next to the message under "In your terminal or editor", and send it in Cursor's chat. The agent adds the setting and tells you what's left to do. The iOS app and mobile browsers don't show this message, so use the steps above instead.

## What You Can Do

* **Find notes**: Ask about a topic and Cursor searches your notes for those words. Ask for recent notes or the notes in a folder and Cursor lists them, newest first
* **Read and summarize**: Cursor reads the text saved in Inki before it summarizes, quotes, or edits a note. Each note it mentions comes with a link that opens the note in Inki
* **Save new notes**: Save a draft from a local file or the conversation as a new note, in a folder you name. If the folder doesn't exist yet, Cursor can create it
* **Edit notes**: Ask Cursor to replace a paragraph, add a sentence, or remove a passage. Inki keeps the version from before each edit in the note's [version history](https://docs.inki.so/en/features/notebook.md#version-history), so you can restore it
* **Rename and move notes**: Change a note's title or move it to another folder. The note's text stays the same
* **Move a note to the trash**: Cursor moves one note at a time. You can restore it from [Trash](https://docs.inki.so/en/features/notebook-operations.md#trash) for 30 days
* **Check the connected account**: Ask which Inki account is connected, and Cursor shows its name and email address

## Example Prompts

* Which Inki account is connected?
* What did I write most recently in Inki?
* Write a release announcement based on this repository's README and save it as "v2.0 announcement" in my Announcements folder in Inki.
* Read my Inki note "Design notes" and list where it differs from the current code.
* Open my Inki note "Weekly update" and add a summary of the pull requests merged this week at the end.

## When Cursor Asks for Permission

By default, Cursor asks before it uses one of Inki's tools. Click the arrow next to the tool name to see what it will send to Inki. Depending on your Run Mode setting and which tools are allowed to run automatically, Cursor may use a tool without asking. We recommend keeping Cursor asking before it edits a note, renames or moves it, or moves it to the trash, so you can check each change before you allow it.

## What Cursor Can't Do

* Permanently delete notes or empty Trash
* Delete folders
* Move several notes, a whole folder, or all your notes to the trash at once
* Create share links
* Read or change notes that belong to other members of your workspace

To delete a note permanently, use [Trash](https://docs.inki.so/en/features/notebook-operations.md#restore-or-permanently-delete) in Inki.

## Disconnect

* **Desktop browser and Mac app**: Open Settings > Account. Under "Connect your agent", click "Disconnect" next to Cursor in the connected list, then click "Disconnect" again in the same row to confirm
* **Any browser**: Open [inki.so/en/connections](https://inki.so/en/connections), sign in, click "Disconnect" next to Cursor, then confirm in the same row

If you turn off or remove "inki" in Cursor's "Customize" > "MCPs", Cursor still appears in Inki's connected list. To remove it there, disconnect it in Inki as described above.

Notes you've already saved stay in Inki after you disconnect. To use Inki again, log in again from "inki" in "Customize" > "MCPs".

## Things to Know

* If "inki" doesn't appear in "Customize" > "MCPs", check `~/.cursor/mcp.json`. The entry has to be inside `mcpServers`, with no missing commas
* If "inki" appears but doesn't work, check that its switch is on and that you've logged in
* Search matches the words in your notes. If Cursor doesn't find a note, try different words. Recent edits can take a moment to show up in search results
* Cursor reads the version saved in Inki. Edits still open on another device may not be saved yet, so Cursor may not see them
* If a note changes in Inki after Cursor reads it, Inki refuses Cursor's edit and nothing is written. Cursor reads the note again before it tries again, so your newer changes aren't overwritten
* Inki tells Cursor that text inside your notes is your content, not instructions. Only your own requests should decide what Cursor does. If Cursor asks to make a change you didn't ask for, don't allow it
