# Headings and Formatting

> Add headings, insert line breaks within a paragraph, and paste Markdown

## Add a Heading

In a desktop browser or the Mac app, turn a line into a heading in any of these ways:

* Type `/` in the note and choose "Heading 1", "Heading 2", or "Heading 3"
* At the start of a line, type `# ` (Heading 1), `## ` (Heading 2), or `### ` (Heading 3), using `#` followed by a space
* Press `Cmd+Option+1` to `3` (`Ctrl+Alt+1` to `3` on Windows or Linux). Press `Cmd+Option+0` (`Ctrl+Alt+0`) to turn it back into text

In the iOS app or a mobile browser, while editing, tap `+` in the bar above the keyboard, then tap H1, H2, or H3. When text is selected, use the formatting button in the same bar.

For other shortcuts, see [Keyboard Shortcuts](/en/features/settings#keyboard-shortcuts).

## Insert a Line Break

In a desktop browser or the Mac app, `Enter` starts a new paragraph. To break the line within the same paragraph, press `Shift+Enter`.

## Paste Markdown

In a desktop browser or the Mac app, pasting Markdown into a note imports formatting such as headings and lists. For combinations the note editor doesn't support, the content stays in the note with these layout changes:

* Lists, headings, code blocks, and tables inside a quote appear outside the quote, in their original order
* Code blocks, tables, and similar blocks inside a list item appear after that item. The numbered list resumes with the next item's number
* Footnotes remain as literal Markdown text and aren't converted into Inki citations
