What is AI Assistant

AI Assistant lets you discuss a note and handle research, drafting, and editing in the same chat. It can edit the note, create notes and folders, and organize your work.

What You Can Do

Discuss before changing the note

Ask for ideas, comparisons, feedback, reviews, or research when you want advice first. AI Assistant replies in chat and leaves your note unchanged. Once you choose what to keep, ask it to add that content to the note. When you ask AI Assistant to draft, write, edit, or fix the note directly, it can make the requested change. You can also tell it to confirm with you before writing.

Edit and organize notes

Ask AI Assistant to draft or revise text, or to handle these actions:
  • Create a note or folder
  • Rename one of your notes
  • Move one of your notes to another folder
You can specify one of your own notes to rename or move without opening it. Editing the body still applies to the note you have open.

Create an image for your writing

When a blog post needs a cover image or a visual between sections, ask for one in the same chat where you’re discussing the note. AI Assistant uses the current note, selected text, and your chat instructions to shape the image. You don’t have to open a separate image tool and explain the article again. Describe the image you want in the chat. The generated image appears in the chat in a desktop browser, the Mac app, a mobile browser, or the iOS app (version 1.0.15 or later). In a desktop browser or the Mac app, click the image to enlarge it. You can copy it or drag the thumbnail to the exact position you want in your note. Mobile browsers and the iOS app support viewing the image in chat. Use AI Assistant when you want to discuss the direction in chat and place the result anywhere in the note. Use Inline Generation when you want an image based on the text around your cursor and inserted where you’re writing.

Use a Topic

In a desktop browser or the Mac app, click “Topic” next to + in the chat box, then choose a document type. To clear your selection, open the same menu and choose “Remove topic.” You can also type @ to search for a Topic. # is treated as regular text in the chat box. In the iOS app or a mobile browser, choose “Add Topic” from the note’s menu. Selecting a Topic adds instructions for that document type to the conversation. Inki may set a Topic automatically in an empty note based on what you enter. Before sending the next message, you can undo the selection from the notice that appears. In a desktop browser or the Mac app, pasting a substantial amount of text into a note without a Topic may set a matching Topic automatically.

Attach files

See Working with Chats for how to attach files and the limits. To add an attached image to the note, specify the image and where it should go, for example, “Put the attached photo after the introduction.” You can also use images you attached in earlier chats. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported, with a limit of 25MB per image added to a note. WebP images are converted to PNG; an image can’t be added if the converted file exceeds the limit.

Ask about images in a note

Ask about an image inserted in one of your own notes, for example, “Explain the trend in this note’s chart.” If there are several images, identify it by its position or caption. The reply tells you when the image couldn’t be read. For a GIF, only the first frame is used.

Search the web

When your request needs current or source-backed information, AI Assistant can search the web and use the results in its response.

Write with citations

Ask AI Assistant to read sources and write with citations. It can also cite sources read earlier in the same chat. You can ask it to add, move, or remove citations, or correct a source’s title, authors, or publication year. Web citations show authors and publication years when that information is available. Check the source details, since not every source provides them. To replace a source with one at a different URL or DOI, ask AI Assistant to read and cite the new source.

Save instructions for future use

Ask explicitly, for example, “Remember to use a formal tone from now on,” to add to your personal custom instructions. This works even when learning is off, and saved instructions apply from the next generation. Check the saved wording in the reply. You can save instructions that apply only to one note as note rules. Note rules don’t affect other notes. You can open the rules or undo the save from the confirmation shown in chat. In a desktop browser, the Mac app, a mobile browser, or the iOS app (version 1.0.18 or later), press the confirmation text to open the rules. Use the Undo icon beside it to undo the save. If you add or edit instructions afterward, you can’t undo the earlier addition because doing so could overwrite those changes. Older additions also can’t be undone if the information needed to restore them is unavailable.

View memory

To view personal memory created from your notes, open Settings > Memory in a desktop browser or the Mac app. In the iOS app (version 1.0.10 or later) or a mobile browser, open Settings > Writing rules > Your memory. To view a folder’s memory, click “Memory” at the top of the folder page in a desktop browser or the Mac app, or open the folder’s menu in the iOS app (version 1.0.10 or later) or a mobile browser. Use the displayed sources to check the original notes or rules. If memory fails to load in the iOS app (version 1.0.18 or later) or a mobile browser, tap “Retry” on the memory screen. In the memory screen, turn learning on or off and request an update. Updates may take time, so check the status shown on the screen. Turning learning off hides the memory content, but explicitly saved custom instructions still apply.

Review Changes and Restore Safely

Edits to your note appear as diffs. In a desktop browser or the Mac app, click “Show changes” after the reply, or expand “Thought” to see the diff for each edit. In the iOS app (version 1.0.18 or later) or a mobile browser, tap “Show changes” below the reply to open the diff. To return to earlier content, open the note’s version history, select a version, and restore it.

Edit Long Notes

AI Assistant can focus on a specific section of a long note instead of replacing the whole note. Give it a clear target, such as “Shorten only the conclusion,” to keep the change focused. If Inki can’t edit the whole note safely, it keeps the existing text and suggests splitting the request, reloading the page, or trying the instruction again.
