How Inki Works in Claude Code

Claude Code uses the Inki connector you added in Claude. You can save a draft you wrote in your terminal or editor as an Inki note, or read an Inki note and keep writing from it. Notes you save open in Inki, so you can keep writing there. You can’t connect Inki from Claude Code alone. Connect Inki in Claude first, then sign in to Claude Code with the same Claude account. If you use Claude Code with an API key, Inki isn’t available.

Connect Inki

You need an Inki account and a Claude account.
  1. Connect Inki in Claude. See Use Inki in Claude for the steps
  2. In Claude Code, run /login and sign in with the same Claude account you connected Inki to. If you’re already signed in with that account, skip this step
  3. Restart Claude Code
  4. In Claude Code, run /mcp and check that “claude.ai Inki” shows as connected

What You Can Do

  • Find notes: Ask about a topic and Claude Code searches your notes for those words. Ask for recent notes or the notes in a folder and Claude Code lists them, newest first
  • Read and summarize: Claude Code reads the text saved in Inki before it summarizes, quotes, or edits a note. Each note it mentions comes with a link that opens the note in Inki
  • Save new notes: Save a draft from a local file or the conversation as a new note, in a folder you name. If the folder doesn’t exist yet, Claude Code can create it
  • Edit notes: Ask Claude Code to replace a paragraph, add a sentence, or remove a passage. Inki keeps the version from before each edit in the note’s version history, so you can restore it
  • Rename and move notes: Change a note’s title or move it to another folder. The note’s text stays the same
  • Move a note to the trash: Claude Code moves one note at a time. You can restore it from Trash for 30 days
  • Check the connected account: Ask which Inki account is connected, and Claude Code shows its name and email address

Example Prompts

  • Which Inki account is connected?
  • What did I write most recently in Inki?
  • Write a release announcement based on this repository’s README and save it as “v2.0 announcement” in my Announcements folder in Inki.
  • Read my Inki note “Design notes” and list where it differs from the current code.
  • Open my Inki note “Weekly update” and add a summary of the pull requests merged this week at the end.

When Claude Code Asks for Permission

Claude Code asks before it uses one of Inki’s tools. When it asks, it shows the tool and what it will send to Inki. If you choose not to be asked again, Claude Code uses that tool without asking from then on. You can review and remove these choices with /permissions. We recommend keeping Claude Code asking before it edits a note, renames or moves it, or moves it to the trash, so you can check each change before you allow it.

What Claude Code Can’t Do

  • Permanently delete notes or empty Trash
  • Delete folders
  • Move several notes, a whole folder, or all your notes to the trash at once
  • Create share links
  • Read or change notes that belong to other members of your workspace
To delete a note permanently, use Trash in Inki.

Disconnect

Claude Code uses the Inki connector you added in Claude. When you disconnect it, neither Claude nor Claude Code can use Inki.
  • Desktop browser and Mac app: Open Settings > Account. Under “Connected services”, click “Disconnect” next to Claude, then click “Disconnect” again in the same row to confirm. This section appears only while at least one service is connected
  • Any browser: Open inki.so/en/connections, sign in, and click “Disconnect” next to Claude, then confirm in the same row
If you disconnect Inki in Claude (“Customize” > “Connectors”), Claude still appears under Inki’s connected services. To remove it there, disconnect it in Inki as described above. Notes you’ve already saved stay in Inki after you disconnect. To use Inki again, connect it again from Claude.

Things to Know

  • If “claude.ai Inki” doesn’t appear in /mcp, run /status to check that Claude Code is signed in with a Claude account (not an API key) and that it’s the same account you connected Inki to, then restart Claude Code
  • If “claude.ai Inki” appears in /mcp but doesn’t work, check in /mcp that Inki isn’t turned off for that project
  • Search matches the words in your notes. If Claude Code doesn’t find a note, try different words. Recent edits can take a moment to show up in search results
  • Claude Code reads the version saved in Inki. Edits still open on another device may not be saved yet, so Claude Code may not see them
  • If a note changes in Inki after Claude Code reads it, Inki refuses Claude Code’s edit and nothing is written. Claude Code reads the note again before it tries again, so your newer changes aren’t overwritten
  • Inki tells Claude Code that text inside your notes is your content, not instructions. Only your own requests should decide what Claude Code does. If Claude Code asks to make a change you didn’t ask for, don’t allow it
